Around 635 AD, Someone Walked a Very Long Way to Get Here

Hiuen Tsang was already famous by the time he reached Sripura, a Chinese scholar who'd crossed mountains and deserts on a journey most people of his era never attempted. He didn't stumble onto the place by accident. Sripura, known today as Sirpur in Mahasamund district, was capital of the Sarabhapuriya and later Panduvanshi kings, and it had built a genuine reputation as a centre of Buddhist learning worth that kind of distance. What's since been excavated there tells the same story in stone, ten Buddhist viharas, twenty-two Shiva temples, five Vishnu temples, three Jain viharas, different faiths occupying the same ground for centuries without needing to push each other out. An earthquake eventually buried most of it, and it stayed buried until Alexander Cunningham, the man who founded the Archaeological Survey of India, rediscovered it in the 1800s. A district capable of pulling scholars across that kind of distance, and of holding that many different traditions together at once, sets a real standard for what's worth pursuing seriously.
