The Malayalam calendar is named after Kollam.
Not after a king. Not after a river. After this city. In 825 CE, at meetings held here, the decision was made to start counting time from Kollam. Kollavarsham - Kollam-year. Every Malayalam speaker in the world, wherever they are, has been counting from this city for twelve centuries.
That's not a minor footnote. That's the kind of weight a place carries when it becomes a starting point.
Marco Polo came here. So did Ibn Battuta, separately, in a different century. The Phoenicians and Rome were trading through this port before either of those two arrived - pepper, pearls, coir, everything that made this coast worth the voyage. Quilon, the Portuguese called it. Koolam, the Arabs wrote. Desinganadu in ancient Tamil literature. Different names, same city, same Arabian Sea.
Today: cashew capital of India. Thirty percent of the city is on Ashtamudi Lake - eight arms, hence the name. One-third of Kerala's fish production comes from this district's coastline. Women in hundreds of cashew factories across Karunagappally, Kundara, and the surrounding areas process and sort nuts by hand, same as their mothers did.
Punalur is 60 kilometres east, going inland toward the forest. Karunagappally, 30 north. Kottarakkara, 40 east. And Sainik School Kazhakootam, which is Kerala's Sainik School, sits 70 kilometres south near Thiruvananthapuram - the most natural target for any Kollam family.
At Sainik Coaching, Sainik School coaching in Kollam is what we've been doing since 2012. 4,500+ selections. 92% success rate. 12+ years on AISSEE, RMS, and RIMC - not boards, not NEET, just this. We work with families across Kollam, Karunagappally, Punalur, Kundara, Kottarakkara, and the wider district.
This is the question I hear most often from Kollam families after a first attempt.
Kerala's literacy is real - 94 percent in this district. The schools are genuinely strong. So the assumption, almost every time, is that AISSEE will follow naturally from good schooling. It usually doesn't, and the reason isn't that the child is weak. It's that AISSEE tests something different from what school builds.
The exam is 125 questions in 150 minutes. OMR sheets. All objective. No partial credit. No going back to fix an answer on question 40 when you're now on question 80 and running out of time. And around question 65, something appears that the student hasn't seen in exactly that form before. The ones who clear keep moving at the same pace. The ones who don't lose time and never recover it.
That ability - maintaining pace under sustained time pressure when something unfamiliar shows up - is a specific, trainable skill. It doesn't come from content knowledge alone. It comes from weeks and months of practising in those exact conditions, consistently, until the conditions stop feeling like pressure.
That's what we build. Military school coaching in Kollam at Sainik Coaching runs timed mock tests from the very first session. Every week. Without exception. By the time actual exam day arrives, it feels like any other Tuesday - not because the exam got easier, but because the student has sat through it dozens of times already.
For families in Karunagappally, Punalur, Kundara, and Kottarakkara - our online batch delivers live daily classes, same-day recordings, and direct teacher contact on WhatsApp. Not a forwarded message board. An actual conversation about your child's last test. Students preparing online write the same tests as students sitting in our classroom. Same week. Same questions. Same feedback loop. The difference in outcome between offline and online, when the online batch is run seriously, is nothing.
Class 6 AISSEE - Class 5 students, full paper: Maths, Intelligence, English, GK. We teach Maths through logic, not formula. Once a student understands why a problem type works, an unfamiliar version doesn't stop them. Intelligence like puzzles - specific, deliberate practice. English built for the exact question patterns in the paper, not for boards. By exam day, nothing about the format surprises them.
Class 9 AISSEE - Different exam entirely. Different subjects, different pattern, different cut-offs, fewer seats. Science and Social Studies added. NTA format throughout. We run it separately - different batch, different teachers' focus, different testing rhythm. A gap found in October has months to close. Found in December it has nothing.
RMS - Let me be clear: not AISSEE. Different paper structure. Different marking. Different interview entirely. A student who prepares for AISSEE and attempts RMS without specific RMS coaching will find gaps - usually at exactly the moment they can't afford to. We run RMS as its own dedicated batch with focused work on the sections where RMS results are actually decided.
RIMC - Fifty seats, all of India. Advanced subjective English at a level well above Class 8. Maths that goes beyond the AISSEE level significantly. And a personal interview that evaluates personality and composure under real scrutiny, not just academic achievement. We're honest about who is suited for this track before recommending it. Not every student who wants RIMC should attempt RIMC, and we say so.
One room. Three families who'd never heard of us before and decided to take a chance anyway.
We didn't have results to show them yet. What we had: honest assessment of where each student actually stood, a plan built from that real picture, and real exam conditions practiced every week until those conditions stopped feeling like pressure.
All three cleared the written exam that year.
4,500+ selections later, not one thing about that approach has changed. Every student gets assessed before we place them anywhere - by actual ability in Maths, English, and reasoning, not by school name, family background, or which taluk they live in. Some who look strong turn out to have one specific gap that nobody caught because it only surfaces under timed conditions. Some who seem behind are simply untrained - which is fixable, faster than most parents expect. Batches stay small because a student who disappears into a large class also disappears from teacher attention. Parents receive honest feedback after every test, including the parts that are difficult to hear. If a child isn't working hard enough, we say it. Before the next test does.
Most parents find that part uncomfortable. Most later say it was the most useful part of the preparation - more than any technique or study plan we gave them.
12+ years. 4,500+ selections. 92% success rate. Since 2012.
Concept Clarity - the logic behind every topic. When understanding is real, speed follows. Exam Simulation - timed mock tests from Day One, so by actual exam day it feels like Wednesday, not the most important morning of the year. Routine Reset - the daily habits of a future officer built in before the exam. Small Batches - every student known, every weakness tracked. Online + Offline - one standard, reaching Punalur and Kundara and Karunagappally the same way it reaches Kollam city.
Fill the form on our website. We call back the same day - no pitch, no pressure, just straight answers about your child's specific situation.
