There are currently over thirty Sainik Schools operating across the country. Each school is affiliated to CBSE and offers education from Class 6 to Class 12. Sainik Schools are co-educational in many states now, which means both boys and girls can apply. The admission exam is called AISSEE ↗ — All India Sainik School Entrance Exam — and it is held once a year.
Rashtriya Military Schools, known as RMS, are a group of five schools located in Ajmer, Bangalore, Belgaum, Chail, and Dholpur. These schools were originally established for the sons of defence personnel but they are now open to all students. Like Sainik Schools they follow the CBSE curriculum and offer education from Class 6 onwards. RMS schools are known for their strong academic record and their high success rate in NDA entries. Admission is through a separate entrance exam conducted by the respective schools.
The Difference in Difficulty
If you are asking which exam is the hardest, RIMC sits clearly at the top. The RIMC entrance exam demands a very high standard of English — comprehension, essay writing, and grammar at a level that requires months of specific preparation. The Maths section is also significantly harder than what most Class 7 students are used to. And unlike AISSEE and RMS, RIMC also has a full interview round that carries real weight in the selection. Getting through RIMC requires a child who is strong academically, confident in communication, and genuinely well-rounded in their abilities.
The RMS entrance exam sits in the middle in terms of difficulty. It is harder than a school exam but more approachable than RIMC for most students. RMS also admits students at Class 6 and Class 9 levels. The age criteria are similar to Sainik Schools. Boys and girls can both apply. Children of defence personnel are given preference in the selection but civilian children are also admitted based on merit.

RIMC fees are approximately thirty five thousand to forty thousand rupees per term which works out to around seventy to eighty thousand rupees per year. Children of defence personnel can access additional financial support through the Kendriya Sainik Board.
Sainik Schools have a similar fee structure though it varies slightly from school to school depending on the state. Most Sainik Schools charge between twenty five thousand and fifty thousand rupees per term. Financial assistance is available for students from lower income families and children of defence personnel receive fee concessions. Many state governments also offer scholarships specifically for students admitted to Sainik Schools.
RMS fees are comparable to Sainik Schools. Children of defence personnel receive preferential fee concessions. Civilian students pay a slightly higher fee but even this is very affordable compared to private boarding schools. Financial aid is available for families who qualify based on income criteria.
Life Inside These Schools
The daily routine in all three schools follows a structured military-style schedule. Early morning physical training, assembly, academic classes, sports in the afternoon, evening study hours, and fixed meal and sleep times. This structure is one of the biggest benefits of studying in any of these institutions.
