The day your child gets that Sainik School joining letter, the whole house celebrates. Sweets are distributed. Relatives call to congratulate. Photos are clicked in the new uniform. But somewhere in the middle of all this happiness, a quiet thought sits in the corner of every parent's mind — "मेरा बच्चा घर से दूर कैसे रहेगा?"

That feeling has a name. It's called homesickness — and almost every new cadet goes through it. The good news? It passes. With the right support, your child not only gets over it — they come out stronger than ever. Here's how to handle it together.

Pehle Yeh Samjhiye — Homesickness Normal Hai

Sainik School is a residential school. Your child is suddenly living away from home, sleeping in a hostel bed, eating in a mess, and following a strict timetable. It's a big change for an 11-year-old.

The first 2 to 6 weeks are usually the hardest. Tears on phone calls, "papa mujhe ghar aana hai," sad letters home — all of this is completely normal. Don't panic. Don't feel guilty. Almost every cadet feels this way. It is not a sign that your child is weak. It's a sign that your child loves home — which is a beautiful thing.

Tips for Parents — Aap Kya Kar Sakte Hain

1. Pre-Admission Mental Preparation Karein

Before your child leaves, talk openly. Don't paint a fake rosy picture. Tell them — "Shuru mein mushkil lagega. Yeh normal hai. Tum strong ho. Hum hamesha tumhare saath hain." Honest talks build trust.

2. Phone Calls Par Strong Banein

When your child cries on the phone, your heart will break. But please don't cry along with them. Stay calm. Listen. Then gently remind them about their school friends, the activities they enjoy, and the holidays coming up. Your strength becomes their strength.

3. Letters Likhein — Yes, Asli Letters

Old-school but magic. A handwritten letter from home means more than 10 phone calls. Ghar ki khushboo us paper mein hoti hai. Send them weekly.

4. Visiting Day Miss Mat Kariye

Every Sainik School has parents' visiting days. Mark them on the calendar. Be there. Carry homemade food, photos, small gifts from siblings. These visits recharge your child's heart for weeks.

5. Don't Promise to Bring Them Back

This is the hardest one. When your child cries and begs to come home, never say "theek hai, le aate hain." It gives false hope and makes the next week even harder. Be loving but firm — "Beta, thoda time lagega, lekin tum kar loge."

Tips for the Cadet — Apne Bachche Ko Yeh Sikhayein

  • Naye dost banao — Other cadets are also missing home. Talking to them helps everyone.
  • Routine mein lag jao — PT, classes, games, study — when the day is full, the mind is busy.
  • Seniors aur teachers se baat karo — They've seen hundreds of new cadets. They understand.
  • Photo album rakho — Family photos in the trunk box are like a small piece of home.
  • Khel mein dil lagao — Sports, NCC drills, hobbies — these become best friends very quickly.

Kab Worry Karna Chahiye?

If after 2-3 months your child is still crying every day, not eating, losing weight, or refusing to talk — please contact the school counsellor or housemaster. Sainik Schools have trained staff for exactly this. Don't ignore the signs, but also don't rush to pull them out.

Ek Important Baat

Most cadets who feel terrible homesickness in the first month end up loving Sainik School by the end of the first year. They make lifelong friends. They develop confidence no day-school child can match. And one day — usually after the first vacation ends — your child will surprise you by saying "papa, school wapas kab jaana hai?"

That is the day you'll know — homesickness ne aapke bachche ko todha nahi, banaya hai.
